Liner Seam Tape
If you are investing the time and money to install Dura-Skrim Vapor, Gas or Moisture Barrier, make sure to use the real seam tape, DIY Liner Seam Tape. Using anything less could be the same as leaving the seams unsealed. DIY Liner Seam Tape is made of Polyethylene, same as you’re Barrier.
Understanding the importance of liner seam tape is essential to properly completing your project. Would you leave a window open all winter? No. You would close it, lock it and make sure it holds out the cold and holds in the heat.
In the same way, your building encapsulation project will have seams where panels of vapor barrier meet. Each seam is a potential open window. Seal all seams using the best methods and the right products to ensure a complete building envelope.
Method: Water, water vapor, gases, etc., will find a easiest way in or out. A properly sealed seam is just as protective as the Barrier, not letting anything pass through. Double seal it. A proper seam should always have a 12” overlap of material. The first seal goes between the Barrier layers 3” to 4” from the edge of the lower Barrier. Use a continuous bead of Polyurethane Sealant (at least ¼” x ¼”) or a continuous strip of double sided Butyl Tape (at least ¾” by ¼”). Then, use 4” DIY Liner Seam Tape to seal the exposed edge. (If you have access to both sides of the barrier – if you are hanging it vertically on framing or from a top support like most grow rooms – use DIY Liner Seam Tape on both sides to seal both exposed edges.)
The rubber adhesive of this Polyethylene tape is ideal for use with Polyethylene Barriers, it grabs fast, holds and seals tight, stays flexible, and can be removed, in one piece, with no residue. (DIY Liner Seam Tape is an indoor/outdoor tape. The recommended temperature range is 32 F to 160F.)
